MEDFORD — Healthcare workers in Southern Oregon are learning more about caring for those with dementia and Alzheimer’s disease thanks to free training being offered by Oregon Care Partners. The training is for anyone working or living in Oregon to help them care for dementia and Alzheimer’s patients.
Trainers explained about the medications available to help treat those diseases. They also say changing the patient’s environment versus trying to change them, is an effective way of helping them cope.
The class also addressed the frustration that caregivers may experience. The instructors say it can be very difficult seeing the patient change and no longer be who they once were. But a little understanding can go a long way.
Jennifer Wright, Licensed Nursing Home Administrator, says, “First off, it’s not the fault of the person with the disease. It’s described as a brain disease. the more you can talk about the disease, the more you can talk about the disease, the more you can help the person with it.”
There are more free training classes coming on May 11, June 4, and June 24 [2015].
