Oregon care partners held a workshop today at the Eugene Hilton. It’s aimed to provide support to those caring for someone with alzheimer’s or dementia. The free event is part of a statewide caregiver training intiative.
Whether you are a licensed caregiver or not, the program allows you to learn more about how to care and assist people with the disease. The instructor taught several techniques.
For instance, she says music and art can be soothing. Most importantly, the person needs to feel safe. She also says there can also be positive moments, like when people do things they forget they can’t do.
“At some point in time, you’re told well you can’t draw, or you can’t do that because you’re just not talented in that way, well when the filter is gone that tells them well do I know how to do this, do I not know how to do that, doesn’t matter im going to try and it’s amazing,” said trainer Shelly Edwards.
If you weren’t able to attend today’s workshop, not to worry. They have classes online or in person until the end of June. Just go to oregoncarepartners.com to find out the dates and times.
